Couch to 5K: Take two!

I started C25K a few months ago.
I quit.
It was really hot.  I doubt heat strokes are that much fun.

Three weeks ago, I started going back to the gym.
I goofed off the first week on the elliptical machines, then braved the treadmills.
I decided to repeat the first week.

I've timed my mile three times now. The first time was during week one on the treadmill. I didn't write it down, but it was 13 minutes.
W2D1- 12:10
W2D3-  11:52

Granted the times are jogging/running and walking intervals.
I had goal a while back of running two miles in 21:00.

There is a 5K coming up in my town October 9th. That's four days after my 27th (gasp) birthday.  I am seriously thinking of doing it. I should have "graduated" from C25K a few weeks prior to that.  I am hoping that it will have cooled down enough to run outside.

I know I will be one of the last ones to finish.
Why do I want to do it?
I've lost 100 lbs in the last year and a half. I've been working hard on getting healthy. It's after my birthday. I've spent the last 10 years being obese, unfit and unhealthy. I also have social anxiety disorder, so just being able to get out there and finish will be a huge accomplishment.

Jumbo Crayons for Kindergarten?

Today is 8.9.10!
I may be dorky, but I think that's neat.

If you are friends with me on facebook, or follow me on twitter, you might have noticed me complaining about jumbo crayons and pencils.

We finally got a school supply list from a local store, and the short list of supplies for kindergartens included jumbo crayons and jumbo pencils. It seems odd to me. Shouldn't five and six year olds be developmentally past this?

According to one of my friends (who I believe has worked with disabled/challenged people, and also has an autistic daughter) I am right.

I do understand that some children might not have been exposed to writing utensils and that other children might have disabilities. But to require that all kindergarten kids buy them? If the teacher notices they child can't use regular size crayons or pencils, then they should help the student. Then suggest the jumbo versions.

Brye has been colouring and writing with normal sized crayons and pencils from the beginning. In his pre-school class they didn't use jumbo crayons. It seems like a waste of time to teach kids to use big awkward crayons then the next year expect them to use regular ones. What about kids like Brye who think that jumbo crayons are for "babies"?

In my mind, they are debasing the kids to the same level.
Aren't teachers supposed to access the children and try to help the child succeed?
It's they're already gearing up to lump all the kids into the same category, dumb them down, strip away all creativity and individualism and push them trough school -- as long as the grades average out.

I didn't mention, we had to buy everything plain and without designs. This is public school. Private schools doing this makes sense, but come on. How are the kids supposed to express themselves?

Now if only I could find the information to print out and take to the open house.

It's going to be a LONG 12 years.

I would give anything to be able to home-school.

No-Go BlogHer Blog Hop

NoGoBlogHer I would love to be in NYC attending BlogHer.
But since I am not, here is my No-Go BlogHer Blog Hop post.

When did you start blogging?
I started blogging when I was about 14. It was off and on thing, before blogging and social networking were popular. I had my own free website and had html codes to make it look like a blog does now.
I then found diary land and live journal.
I started this blog, under a different name, in October of 2008.

Why did you start blogging?
To stay in touch with my Grandparents in Canada so they would know what was happening in our lives. After I had Brye, I started using live journal to connect with moms with the same interests and to vent.

What is one thing you are going to do this week that is WAY cooler than going to BlogHer?
School shopping with Brye! He is starting Kindergarten this year. We're going to the City (that makes us sound very Country-fied doesn't it) and going out for pizza.

Share a post that you think says a lot about you or is your favorite.
Sorry, hard to pick just one.
