I would like to take the time to mention a few Cloth Diaper Organizations.
First up is Miracle Diapers, Inc.
They are a 501(c)(3) Non Profit Organization that helps qualifying families get a jump start on cloth diapering. They only accept a certain amount of applications throughout the month. For more information on how to apply, please visit the "How to Apply" section of Miracle Diapers.
A similar organization is Teeny Greenies.
Teeny Greenies serves local families and is not based on financial need. There are currently branched operating in Des Moines Iowa, Twin Cities Minnesota, Surry County North Carolina and The Texas Panhandle area. Here is the part where I mention that I am the Branch Manager for Gnome Grown Teeny Greenies which serves Mount Airy and Surry County North Carolina.
If you happen to live in Austin Texas, then you might want to check out Tiny Birds Organic. They offer a free starter pack of prefold diapers, as well as used diapers and covers in their free bin. They also accept donations to keep the free bin going.
I recently came across Fluff Factory. It's a group of WAHM (work at home moms) who put together auctions to benefit various charities. Many of the WAHMs are diaper makers.
If you know of any other organizations that provides cloth diapers to families, please feel free to email me or leave a comment below. I will be happy to list them here as well as on the Gnome Grown Teeny Greenies Site.

Body After Baby! Week 5
It's Week 5 of Mama Notes' Body After Baby Challenge.
This has been a fun week. (NOT!)
Last Wednesday I started a job at GNC. It's great on many levels.
The down fall is that I'm so freaking exhausted. I've not had time for EA Sports Active. I barely fit my crunches in. The postive side of it though: I am being more active! I am standing and walking the whole time.
I'm not eating as many calories, or carbs, since I try to squeeze as much protein as I can into the calories that I do eat.
Another reason this week stinks: my period. It finally reared it's angry head. All I want to eat is chocolate and ice cream. I broke down and bought a pack of the "Skinny Cow" Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches last Friday. I am proud that I haven't eat them all yet.
Sunday was a bad diet wise. We had left over Halloween cookies which were 160 calories a pop as well as BBQ chips. Ugh. I didn't keep up with calories that day, but I know I did have my protein in the morning.
I was too busy to weigh myself this this morning, but I was 2 lbs lighter than usual yesterday morning. I'm going to skip the weigh in this for this week. Maybe there will be good results next week. I already hit my goal of losing 15 lbs, so I am happy with that.
Points for this week?

Friday Fluff Talk: Frugal Diapering.
Trying to save money by cloth diapering?
Being "frugal" is the best way to save money.
If you happen to sew, or have someone who can sew for you, you're in luck!
I've always loved this free pattern from Ottobre Designs. You could use recycled fabric from around your house or buy it new.
Tshirts can be sewn into prefolds or fitted diapers.
Wool sweaters? They can be cut up and made into soakers or longies.
If you knit, there are you can find free patterns too.
Receiving blankets can be used as flat folds.
Brushing up on frugal diapering can also help you incase of emergencies.
I was once at the Emergency Room with Brye and didn't bring enough diapers. I surprised the nurse (who could only find a newborn diaper) and used a hand towel as a diaper. In a true emergency, I have read online where you can make a cover from a plastic bag.
You can also save money by using cloth wipes. They don't have to be big and fancy. When I was pregnant, I would buy baby wash clothes on sale, or as discount stores.
Just to clarify, the links mentioned in this post are sites that I've either used or found interesting. You can find different ways of making diapers by searching for things like Free Diapers, Free Patterns, Recycled Butt Sweater. . .

Body After Baby! Week 4
Here we are at Week 4. Body After Baby is an eight week challenge by Mamanotes.com. The winner will receive a $50 gift card to Mama Momo and a $25 gift card to our choice of a selection of stores, of which I would chose Old Navy. Love that store!
My Mom bought be EA Sports Active game for my birthday. I started that this past Saturday. Since it was almost 1/2 way through the challenge I took some pics. I also started the "30 Day Challenge" on the game, so that is part of the reason I took the pics. Still not brave enough to post them on the blog, even though there was some noticeable change. If you're a member of the Body After Baby Ning Group then you can see the pictures there.
I need to work on fitting in more exercise. I usually do it in the morning because I weigh myself every morning with Wii Fit. Before bed, Brandon and I "spar" a bit. We came across some kick pads at a thrift store for super cheap! Brandon teaches me some of the stuff that he learned in his MMA class.
How did I do on last week's challenge? Not that well. I had a hard time getting in more than one food for breakfast. If I managed it, then I didn't want much for else at lunch. I think I averaged 2 healthy/balanced meals a day.
On to this week's challenge... sit ups! 50 a day for 50 points. This is a good time for this. While I've lost weight I still have the baby pooch. I keep thinking to myself "let's start doing crunches" but I can never seem to get my rear in gear to actually do it.
So the totals this week:
Weight Lost: 17.8 (222.3 this morning)
Points Total: 98 (84 previous)
This past week's Points: 14 (Tu-2 W-2 Th-3 F-1 Sa-2 Su-2 M-2 )
Off to finish supper and do some sit ups later.

Gro Baby Biodigradable Soaker Pads
I am writing this in hopes of being able to review The Gro Baby System by The Natural Baby Company. They have recently announced their disposable biodegradable and compostable liners.
I have personally never used a system like this. I have heard horror stories of gDiapers and clogged pipes. Being biodegradable, compostable, plastic and chlorine free, The Gro Baby System seems like it would be perfect for our current situation. We're without a washing machine and I'm handwashing diapers. Would be so much easier to use something like this.
The core of the soaker is made of biodegradable Wood Pulp fibers, and contains 3 grams of SAP gel (compared to 10-20 grams in other disposables).
You can buy The Gro Baby Bio Soaker Intro Package for $34.95. You get 50 Bio Soakers and 1 Shell. If you already use the system, you can buy a pack of 50 Soakers for $19.99.

Giveaway: Ear Coils by Silver Shed Studio
I am thrilled to be offering this giveaway!
I met Casey, the artisan behind Silver Shed Studio, when I joined a local mommy group.
Since I've met her, she's shown off pieces of jewlery that she had made for family and friends. Members of the group, myself included, encouraged Casey to sell her creations online.
I love her style of jewelry. Each piece is handmade and made to order.
Originating as a request by a friend who's son is Autistic, Casey created this Autism Awareness key chain. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this item will be donated to First in Families of North Carolina. This organization helps fulfill the unmet needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families.

These cute little earrings are a neat alternative to traditional hoops. Simply thread them through your earring hole from the front or from the back.
They are so lightweight and comfortable! You can sleep, swim or shower with them in and you almost forget they are there. The coil design prevents them from coming out on their own.

Friday Fluff Talk: Buying Used Cloth Diapers
One of my favorite things about Cloth Diapers is the money I save.
If you're new to cloth, I am sure you're siting there calling me crazy. When you look at the price of brand new diapers they seem pricey. The cost varies for different styles and brands.
The biggest money saver: buying used diapers!
If you're in a Mommy Group and you're site has a Buy/Sell/Trade section, start there. The next best places to find used cloth diapers are websites like Diaper Swappers and Cloth Diaper Nation. I have heard about people getting lucky with Craigslist or Freecycle. Personally, I would stick with Diaper Related forums.
EBay is 50/50 with used diapers. Most of the time the diapers are overpriced (even for being used) and then you have OUTRAGEOUS shipping. Most of the time, you can buy a diaper new (with shipping) for what you will pay on EBay.
I have bought several diapers from a site called Spot's Corner. You can also sell other used items here as well. It's often referred to as "Spot's"
On diaper forums, you will usually see a price mentioned like this $14 PPD. When I was new to buying them this way, it took me a while to catch on. It means Postage Paid and you don't have to pay any extra. Be sure to check out the pictures! Some people's idea of GREAT are not the same as others. I bought two Mums Bums All in Ones from two different moms, each for $15 PPD. One was practically brand new. The other was in okay condition. The Velcro was really fuzzy and the laundry tabs didn't work that great. After a few months of use, the strip of Velcro started to come undone. Always ask questions and read descriptions.
It's beneficial to have a rough idea of how much the diapers cost new. If you're watching your diaper spending (I've been cut off several times by my husband) this will help you get the most bang for your buck.
Most of the time, when you buy multiple diapers from the same person, they will give you a bit of a discount. Especially if the diapers are all priced "PPD" and individually. If they don't mention it, you can always try to ask them.
So lets recap:
-Pictures!! Make sure to look at the diaper. Don't be afraid to ask for more.
-Descriptions. Make sure to read them. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
-Have a rough idea of the retail price. What's the point of buying used if they cost as much new?
Till next Friday. . . Stay tuned for more Friday Fluff Talk!

Cloth Diapers - Blog Action Day 2009 | Climate Change |

Being a mom, what's the easiest and smartest way to do your daily part to save the Enviroment?
Cloth Diapering.
Breastfeeding would be another logical choice; but for the purpose of this post I will focus on the diapers.
No one knows how long it takes a disposable diaper to decompose. For all we know, the very diapers our parents were in could still be sitting there in a landfill. They're full of nasty chemicals. Dioxin, Tributyl-tin (TBT), sodium polyacrylate. . . Just to name a few. Dioxin is a known carcinogen. We watched a documentary where they sprayed Dioxin on roads. Eventually the town had to be deserted due to the harmful effects.
Think of all the resources that goes into the manufacturing and transportation disposable diapers. Then they get used once and it's off to the landfill.
Cloth diapers still have to be made and transported. The difference is cloth diapers are washed and used again. They can be used hundred of times before being turned into rags. Yes you use water in washing, but not nearly as much as what is used in the process of making the diapers.

Keep Your Mind on the Wheel! Never Drive While InTEXTicated
I seem to be venting on texting this week don't I?
Texting while driving irks me more people freaking out over "sexting". Not only can you kill yourself, but my family too. Sometimes when I see an irresponsible teenager or young adult texting down the road I am tempted to follow them so I could slap some sense into them where ever they stop. I'm trying to keep a clean record here and aggravated assault wouldn't help me out.
I've almost been hit by teens texting while driving.
I saw a woman, maybe mid twenties ROLL OUT into an intersection into the lane beside me. She was texting. She also got mad when people starting blowing their horns at her.
I happened to come across Mom Sends the Msg this evening.
While I don't have to worry about my kids texting while driving, I pledged!
I can still spread the word, be an example and hope that maybe I can influence others to "keep their mind on the wheel"
Do you feel the same way? Head on over to Mom Sends the Msg and take the pledge yourself.

Body After Baby! Week 3

Here we are at week three of MamaNote's Body After Baby Challenge.
How did I do with the walking?
Not that great. It was raining most of last week.
I got lucky with the points for this past week. The Annual Autumn Leaves Festival was in town this past weekend. We had to park about 10 minutes away and we kept moving the WHOLE time. My legs were killing me Monday. I did a bit over 30 minutes each day of "running" the Island lap on Wii Fit. I didn't count the dozens of times I had to walk up and down the hill to my inlaws. I figured out reasons to walk to the store, but didn't count them separately since I figured the Wii wasn't 100% running.
My weight loss has slowed down... w-a-y down. I lost another 5 pounds, but gained a few back over the weekend. I blame it on my period. It's due any day now. I'm doing decent with the cravings that I usually get. I cracked and had a chocolate milkshake this evening. My husband and I started dating 10 years ago, so it was kind of a treat.
On a positive note, my husband has started back on a "diet" he is tracking his calories too. It helps me so much because we don't have to buy so much junk. He also wants to shadow box, "spar" and always plans to go running. It was his idea to go for a long walk today. He also suggested that I use the Ergo instead of the stroller. Sometimes he can be thoughtful.
And a correction to last week. I only lost 11 pounds. I miscalculated.
I feel like I should have lost more.
This week's challenge focuses on healthy eating.
Progress?
Total Pounds Lost: 13.7 (Weight this morning, 226.4 lbs)
Points Total: 84 (Previous 64)
Earned this week (T-2 W-2 Th-1 F-1 Sa-2 Su-8 M-1 T-3 = 20)

10 Years Ago. . .
October 13th, 1999 Brandon, at the ripe old age of 14 asked me to the Military Ball. He was nervous as all get out. I could tell he wanted to ask something more. I talked him through asking me out. I had just turned 16. That's how he had my number. It was on the invitations that I had given to everyone in AFJROTC a couple of weeks earlier.
Who would have known this is where we would end up?
We've had our ups and downs, but always manage in the end.
It wasn't intentional, but we took the kids for a walk in the woods this evening. The same woods that we used to spend all our time in as teenagers. On our way out, we came across a tree that Brandon had carved our initials into. There is also a little heart that I carved. Today Brandon decided to do it again. This time, he used the "K" instead of the "C" since we're married, even though I can not legally change my last yet. He also added the kid's initials.
You can see the heart I carved many years ago in the second photo.

Ten Years Later
Sexting, Suicide, Bullying... The Joys of Being a Teenager.
I think I am getting old.
Things have changed, that's true.
I read about this 18 year old girl who committed suicide after being ridiculed, called a slut and whore and *gasp* was turned away from parties after "Sexting" which is a catchy way of saying sending nude pictures with your cell phone. Unless things have taken a radical turn in the last few years, don't guys want whores and sluts at parties?
Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for her family that she committed suicide, and that she's dead... I'm ranting about the events leading to it.
First off, be prepared to live with the circumstances.
Common sense, males are generally douche bags. Or has it changed in the last 10 years? A guy is awesome for sleeping with girls and talking about it, but a girl is a whore.
Kids are young and stupid, it's known. Parents should be the one to warn the kids. Do they not teach morals or that there are consequences for your actions?
As far as suicide for being teased, I call bullsh*t on almost all accounts. If there was ever a perfect candidate for "They're teasing me I should kill myself or blow up my school" my husband would be it. I could come in a close second.
When he was in school, he was from a not well off family. He was a bit of a loner and (against my advice, and before it was cool) wore nut hugging jeans, cowboy boots, huge belt buckles and flannel/plaid shirts. He was overweight. He was in JROTC and at our school that made you an easy target. He was called names like Kmart cowboy, Dollar Tree Cowboy and was relentlessly pelted with rocks and food. He played violent video games, watched violent movies was a fan of heavy metal/hard rock (why he wore the cowboy boots is beyond me). He recently told me that he carried a boot knife to school most days, but never used it. He sounds almost like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold doesn't it. So what set the Comlumbine School Shooters off?
As for me, I was a nerd. I had just moved to "Mayberry" from Quebec Canada. I was also in JROTC. I wasn't the prettiest girl, but I wasn't the ugliest either. I was kind of an Indie/Hippie/Bohemian type of teen. I was the first girl on the wrestling team. I was called a whore and a slut. I was never invited to parties. I was routinely told in gym class that I was only on the wrestling team because I getting my freak on during practice. It came from the girls who thought I was messing with their boyfriends. It also came from the guys too. I got called a Dyke a lot too. That was back in the day before it was "cool" to be bisexual or gay and people were extremely homophobic.
Then I started dating Brandon. You can guess how much we were both ridiculed. Even when I talked him out of the cowboy garb and he started wearing tie-dye the kids were still made fun of him.
I think parents use these things as scapegoats. Maybe they should pay more attention to their kids before tragedy strikes.
T-A-L-K to your children. Tell them that not everyone in this world is sunshine and puppy dogs and people can be cruel.
Even at a young age; before digital cameras and cell phones, back in the days of Polaroid cameras I knew about this kind of stuff. Before I start getting flamed...Yes, I did have some fun as a teenager and did some stupid things, but I was paranoid enough to keep things in line. What moron doesn't think about easy it would be to "accidentally" forward the image to someone on your contact list. Remember the "males are douche bags" comment? Of course they're going to show it to their buddy, then they're going to show it to some one else.
If you're going to send a pic, why not make it headless and unidentifiable? If it comes back to you "Deny, Deny, Deny." At least at 14, that was my plan.
Things have changed, that's true.

If you're going to send a pic, why not make it headless and unidentifiable? If it comes back to you "Deny, Deny, Deny." At least at 14, that was my plan.
But when the night is falling
and you cannot find the light, light
You feel your dreams are dying
Hold tight.

Autumn Leaves Festival 2009
Every October, Mount Airy hosts the Autumn Leaves Festival.
They usually see a couple of hundred thousand people over the three day festival. My favorite vendor is an old couple who sells crystals, gems, rocks and geodes. Second would have to be "The Puppet Farm". I would have loved to buy one for Brye, but they only come in white. I guess I could always dye it. I can see it now, a tie dyed puppet. We went into a couple of the local shops, and I found two amazing things: a huge piece of fabric that can be used as a quilt or wall hanging that has The Beatles on it(which I ended up buying), and some type of old cupboard.

Body After Baby! Week 2
It's week two of the Body After Baby Challenge being run by MamaNotes.com. We have mini weekly challenges worth points, and then after the eight weeks we submit before and after pictures. Each week there is a winner, and at the end the grand prize of a $50 gift certificate to Mama Momo and another $25 gift certificate to store of their choice.
Last week the challenge was to drink water. Each glass was one point, max of eight points a day. I am glad to say that I met my goal of at least eight glasses a day. Most says I had about ten. I love water.
This week's challenge? Walking. For every 15 minutes of walking (or running if that's your thing) you get one point. And you would figure that we're in the middle of a rainy week. I'll guess I'll break down and do the running on Wii Fit. The island run probably takes about 10 minutes.
How am I doing otherwise?
I've lost 12 lbs. I've lost a total of 13 (big difference) but I've gained that pound back. Bad annoying pound.
I've lost some inches too. Two inches from both the hips and waist. Still feel huge though.
One thing that I've noticed in the last few days, it's a chore for me to eat 900 calories. Honestly, that is starting to scare me. Besides the whole "cut calories back to far and you start storing fat" thing, I am worried that I am having to force myself to eat. For the fun of it, I've been using the formula that the weight loss doctor gave us in which you subtract the protein calories and eat 600-800 "true" calories. To make it easier on us, I made a spread sheet so I wouldn't have to crunch numbers 24 hours a day. When you factor the small amount that I am eating, I barely make the 600 calories since I eat so much protein. Thank goodness for my multivitamin. Who knows, maybe my stomach is shrinking and it will keep me from overeating in the future.
Want to know my biggest accomplishment (at least to me) for the week? I turned down pizza... at first. We brought home pizza Friday night. My son ended up staying with my inlaws so after eyeballing the pizza for a few hours (we were going to warm it up and serve it the next day) I asked my husband to take it to his parent's house so it wouldn't taunt me. That was a major turning point. I could live off pizza, and gain another 100 lbs in the process.
Pounds Lost- 12 (Currently 229.1 lbs)
Points - 64 (M-8 T-8 W-8 T-8 F-8 S-8 S-8 M-8)

My First Post Card Through Post Crossing
I've always dreamed of traveling the world. As a child, we frequently traveled to Mount Airy, North Carolina from Campbell's Bay, Quebec. I loved the ride, the changing of the scenery and especially the people.
When I was in High School, I contemplated applying to be a Transfer Student and studying in Germany. I even went as far as to teach myself some basic German. Then I met Brandon, and the rest is history.
When I first read about Postcrossing, I knew it wold be a great adventure. Sure, I don't get to travel to the other Countries, but having the postcards sent to me is the next best thing. This one is from near the city of Coburg, in the north of Bavaria in Germany
I plan on keeping all of the postcards in an album or a special box. Who knows, maybe one day when my children will find them as interesting as I always have.

Retro Cloth Diapering - Diaper Pure 1960's
Best way to disinfect and treat diapers to prevent ammonia diaper rash. Diaper Pure disinfects, stops pail odor, too.
Almost any soap or detergent will help get diapers clean. But Diaper Pure is so different it is even used in a special way. (See directions below.) Diaper Pure rinses in, and is absorbed by the fabric to disinfect the diapers. And it stays in to guard against ammonia, which causes diaper rash and wet diaper "burn," for up to 6 hours. . . works even when diapers are wet and baby cannot be changed.
While I was buying milk the other day at a local convenience store, or as the name of the store implies -- Superette, I came across two boxes of Diaper Pure. I bought it mostly for the retro packaging. I'm not entirely sure if it's even safe to use. On the box, there is a 1968 copyright. There is also a mail in offer for 127, 620 or 126 cartridge type film. Sometimes I want to write the companies that are featured on old boxes and see if they're still around. I've tried to search online for information regarding this product and can't find anything.
Active Ingredients -
Trisodium Phosphate 3.30%, N-Alkyl (60% C14; 30% C16; 5% C12; 5% C18) Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride 0.60%
Inert Ingredients -
96.10% (includes Cleaners and Detergents)
Directions
To Stop Diaper Pail Odors -
1.Add usual amount of water to diaper pail
2. Into this dissolve 2 1/2 tablespoons of Diaper Pure. Always dissolve Diaper Pure in water before adding diapers. Do not pour directly on diapers.
3. Then add soiled diapers. Always remove solid waste from diapers before putting diaper in diaper pail.
As a final rinse for long-lasting Bacteriostatic Protection -
1. Wash diapers in machine or tub with your regular soap powder or detergent. Rinse as usual
2. Now, make up a pale blue germicidal solution of Diaper Pure by dissolving four (4) tablespoons of Diaper Pure to a quart of warm water. Avoid pouring powder directly on diapers.
3. Rinse diapers in the solution up to 12 at a time. Wring out excess. Dry
4. At least once a week, put diapers through the normal wash cycle twice.
