How can you be nice without sounding cruel?

One of my hang ups... Being an over-weight young-ish mom. Reason for my choice of words? I strongly believe that "baby" fat is evil and hangs on to you differently than regular fat.
I grew up skinny, but gained a lot during a relationship. Lost a lot, got pregnant. Lost that in 3 years... Pregnant. Now I have 20 lbs to reach the pre-pregnancy goal.
Sorry, got side tracked.
I can't help but notice other people who are "bigger" and wonder "... Do I look like that?" Especially when I know I outweigh them by at least 10 lbs, and they wear something not at all flattering.
Then I am faced with the delicate question of "Do I mention it?"
I know I would like to be told, in a non-cruel way that I look like a beached whale.
Kind of makes me think of the people who watch you get fat but don't say anything about it until you decide to lose weight.
I guess it's a delicate line between being nice and mean.

  1. I know what you mean. I have always been extremely skinny until I had my third child. I was nearly 180 when I gave birth, and I had not lost even half of it before I got pregnant again. "Baby" fat it definitely a whole different thing.
As far as someone looking like a beached in their clothes, I would sooooo want someone to tell me nicely. I have worn things that someone told me looked fine before, only to get home and look in the mirror and discover that it looked like my butt needed its own zip code. I think that there is a style to flatter every body style. Some times you just need a little help finding it.

  2. That's the kind of thing I wouldn't say, not because there's not a kind way to say it, I'm sure there is. I just know that I would bumble the delivery badly.

I tend to slide the info in through the back door... a friend and I were talking about jeans one day, and she lamented the butt crack jeans she was wearing (ummm, hi, age 30, appropriate much?). It was a chance for me to mention the Up To The Belly Button Jeans I had just purchased, and I love them so much and they keep my baby house in check, and maybe she would want to try them.

  3. I comstantly find myself comparing what I look like to what others do. I would love to know what other people think of me (but I'd never be able to honeslty tell someone else if they looked heavier than normal.) And I hate when they make it worse by letting it all hang out!
